Jacob

“Jacob, are you okay?” Olivia asked, her voice full of concern. “We haven’t heard from you for nearly twenty-four hours.”

“I texted the Alpha where I was and why,” Jacob told her, watching Sage sleep.

They’d ordered in and barely gotten out of bed, sleeping on and off. Healing from the wound he’d had took a lot out of him. It didn’t help that all he wanted to do was mark his mate, and at the very least make sure every wolf in the state knew she was his.

“Could you have someone bring me a spare change of clothes?” Jacob asked – his other problem. They hadn’t been able to clean anything but his jeans thanks to how torn up it all was.

His boots were still blood-stained after hours of scrubbing them. Jacob needed something that didn’t reek of his own mortality.

“Yes, of course Jacob. I’m just glad you’re alive,” Olivia said with a sigh. “These damn Cascade assholes have been hounding our borders. It’s taken everything we have to keep them out, but we just don’t have enough people to protect our territory.”

“Is Alexander still in Portland?”

“I called him back, but he argued that it would leave Portland vulnerable. We just need to choose where we’re going to stand and fight,” Olivia muttered. “We’re stretched too thin and it’s going to get someone killed.”

He couldn’t agree more, and Jacob refused to let that person be Sage. “Will she be safe on the property? Or should we stay in town?”

The silence on the other end of the line wasn’t reassuring. “Shane has most of us here at the homestead,” Olivia finally said. “We would need to escort you here, but once inside the property lines you’ll be safe thanks to all the wards. She will be safe.”

Paying the witches to ward their land had seemed like a stupid extravagance at the time, but Jacob was thankful for it today. “Okay, I can have us ready as soon as someone gets here with some clothes.”

Sage mumbled in her sleep. All he could see was the top of her head and the brownish red hair peeking out. The auburn highlights glowed in the morning sun.

Would she like the homestead? Would she get along with Bonnie and Amelia?

Their pack was changing and evolving. No doubt Cascade sensed that. When the full moon finally hit in a few days they’d have two new wolves, maybe even three.

Jacob shook his head and walked into the kitchen, nothing but his jeans on. Even his socks were bloody and gross. It was chilly, but not unbearable. He turned on the coffeemaker, content to listen to Olivia direct the twins before giving Jacob her attention again.

“Sorry,” she muttered. “You know what they can be like when they’re on edge. Noah and Liam have spare clothes and are on their way to you right now. We’ll get you both inside the wards without incident. Amelia and Bonnie are making food right now. Then I want a full report on what happened the other day.
